So Much More To Know | Terminology

It may be Earth Day, but it is still Terminology Thursday! 💜🌱🌎

We like to ensure we’re keeping everyone in-the-know about the various K-pop/BTS terms you may notice us referencing often. The last week or two, you’ve probably seen us talk about a K-pop Era. Do you know what that term means?

An Era is the time an idol/group promotes a particular album or song, so called because they tend to premiere a new image and style according to whatever (usually a new song) they may be promoting during the overall Comeback.

Reminder: we talked about the Comeback last week- this is when an artist is “coming back” after a break (which may be long or short, depending) with new music. For example, we’ve not heard new tunes from BTS since “BE” back in November. There are rumbling of a new song possibly being dropped in May (total rumors at this point), so we’re all awaiting their Comeback. If/when that does happen, the Comeback will likely be accompanied by press releases, interviews, videos, etc.

Tied to a Comeback is the Era- it will usually be named depending on a song, almost always the lead track/first single. As multiple singles are released from an album, we MAY see multiple Eras.

For example, as we talked about “Dark & Wild’, when they released this new album in August of 2014, it was their Comeback. The first single was “Danger” thus ushering in the “Danger Era”. The Era had a unique style to it- wardrobe, hair styles/color, themes for videos and photo shoots. Another example: remember that their debut album was “2 COOL 4 SKOOL” and their first single was “No More Dream” – we consider that the “No More Dream” Era.

These album eras are so much fun to explore- which is why we’ve been sharing those individual member profiles/visuals as we talk about each album. Think of them as almost trading cards! We can see how their looks, ages, hair colors, etc. all change with each release, Comeback and/or Era.

Being we’ve still not seen new music since the Fall of 2020, many consider us still in the “Life Goes On” Era (their last official music video and released song), which followed the “Dynamite” Era of August 2020.

There is always SO MUCH MORE TO KNOW about BTS and their music. We continue to make progress, navigating our way down the BTS Rabbit Hole each week! We hope you found this helpful- drop your questions and thoughts in the comments below!

We know this is kind of a confusing one and maybe we’re oversimplifying things but it’s easiest to think: new music/album after a break: Comeback. Then the Era is usually tied to a particular new song (Dynamite, N.O., etc.)

Whew!
