So Much More To Know | Terminology

Welcome to Terminology Thursdays! Each week we’ll be sharing more background about some key BTS terminology. Again, this is all part of our campaign, “Do You Know, BTS?”

OneLuv BTS is celebrating BTS’s historic Recording Academy / GRAMMYs nomination leading up the big awards ceremony on March 14th. 💜

The band debuted with Big Hit Entertainment way back in June of 2013 with its current seven-member lineup (after nearly three years of recruiting and training—check out those kiddos below) and the letters BTS represented their official name, Bangtan Sonyeondan. This is a Korean phrase meaning “Bulletproof Boy Scouts” and “Bangtan” specifically means “to be resistant to bullets.”

j-hope told ‘Affinity’ Magazine, “It has a profound meaning…Bangtan means to be resistant to bullets, so it means to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets, to preserve the values and ideal of today’s adolescents.”

In 2017, BTS announced a redesign of their logo and that the letters BTS would now have an extended meaning, “Beyond The Scene”, further symbolizing youth who go against the grain to move forward and avoid settling.

Obviously, this continued to express a very powerful message of resilience. And we, as ARMY, still do hear and see that loud and clear, don’t we?

Plus they’ve utilized the initials well- we’ve even seen BTS used to abbreviate their documentaries, “Burn The Stage” (2018), “Bring The Soul” (2019) and “Break The Silence” (2020) as well. Smart!

Oh, and not feeling fully up-to-speed about the above-mentioned ARMY definition quite yet? Stay tuned. We’ll share more about THAT term later today!

OK, now you know! And sure, we’ve shared the details about the “official” definition, but YOU should tell us- what does BTS define for you?
