Let’s keep talking about V and learn more about his music. This lyric is from his iconic solo BTS song, “Singularity” and it’s such a soulful performance showcasing V’s voice perfectly. We’d call it almost haunting.
The song was released on May 7, 2018 and appeared on the album, “Love Yourself : Tear” and a second time on “Love Yourself : Answer” (August 24, 2018). The video was released as a comeback teaser and within fifteen hours, had reached over 10 million views. As of this post, it has been viewed over 157 million times! The lyrics are described as the singer questioning the mask he wears to conceal his true feelings. Has he hidden himself to attain true love? It was written and produced by Charlie J. Perry and we see that RM also has credits for writing and producing. V’s performances of Singularity have become legendary. He begins the song with one arm inside the sleeve of a hanging coat, to give the illusion he’s embracing himself. That and the additional dance choreography are stunning and really enhance the R&B vibe of the song. V’s voice has been described as “honey-like” and that it “gets better with every listen.” We agree! [Burlington County Times] Of course, when we focus on Tae and his music, that voice of his is front and center. We’ve already mentioned how unique and recognizable it is- there is never any doubt who you’re listening to when it’s his verse in a BTS song. His lower-tone vocals are deep, smooth and expressive. Every. Single. Time. V’s contribution to all BTS songs is key. That aside, he has created a very impressive catalog of solo work too. V’s love of jazz and classical music is often apparent in his own compositions. He’s cited Eric Benet and Ruben Studdard as vocal inspirations. And he loves both the challenge and creative expression of songwriting. He has writing credits on at least a dozen songs (both solo and group) and has explained how he’s also enjoyed pushing his abilities by attempting to write more in English. One such song was “Winter Bear”which was released independently from BTS in 2019. The gist of the lyrics is wishing a good, comforting night’s sleep upon the listener; it’s about wanting the good days and how dark times recede when together. Hmm. Still kind of works today, huh? He hoped it would be a gift to his worldwide fans and he was inspired after watching an English-speaking movie. He’s also given a shout-out to RM for helping with the lyrics. (That RM- always in the mix!) [Billboard] He’s also written solo songs, “4 O’Clock” and “Scenery” – for BTS, he’s written (and performed), “Stigma”, “Inner Child”, and most recently, “Blue & Grey” from the album, “BE”. B&G started out as another attempt to write a song fully in English and it was intended for his upcoming mixtape. The band heard it and knew it would be perfect for this new record. Suga, RM and j-hope stepped in to help V write the new, primarily Korean version. It has been a stand-out track from this record-breaking album, perfectly resonating with everyone during these pandemic days. Oh, and let’s not forget his sweet Christmas 2020 release, “Snow Flower” too! There have also been a couple of duets: “It’s Definitely You” with Jin and “Friends” with Jimin. Tae also, early on, released some successful covers via free streaming services. We loved his version of “Someone Like You” originally performed by Adele. Whew! That’s a lot! He’s been pretty busy mastering his craft over this last decade. We’re impressed! We’ll be sharing more about some of these songs and performances over the next couple of days so please be on the lookout for those posts. You now have an excellent introduction to V’s musical background to date. Yet, we think there is so much amazing music to flow from him in the future. Especially his first mixtape. There have been rumblings for months that it’s getting close to being released. He recently said he’s trying to pare down his choices of finished songs from thirteen to eight. Hopefully soon- we’re waiting! As we’ve done with some other members, we recommend reading V’s Comeback Interview from last fall. Weverse Magazine published individual articles for each member to coincide with the release of “BE”. He discusses quite a bit about Blue & Grey, his voice and his songwriting.
