Do you know BTS? | Suga

As we’ve been preparing for each week of our “Do You Know, BTS?” Campaign, it’s been fun digging into the research and finding favorite quotes from the members. 💜

Trust us, it’s often hard to choose! But we’re seeing a trend—as much as we’re using this community as a platform to educate others about BTS (in addition to supporting and celebrating them), we find we keep learning from the members themselves- they’re pretty smart guys! And Suga’s quote this week is no exception.

This reassuring message from Yoongi is just what many of us may need to hear. Especially in these unprecedented times. COVID has been a game-changer for many, affecting both short- and long-term goals. And most of us are in a state of disbelief that we’re coming up on a year of living like this. We’re sure there are many out there who feel like their dreams have been crushed or trying to stir up a new dream feels insurmountable.

Imagine how it’s been for BTS? No tour. Apart from ARMY? We’ve all struggled so we need to remember that in this present moment? It may be OK to not have big dreams- or at least it’s totally acceptable to just put them on hold.

Piecing together more info about Suga gives the sense that he’s had his share of ups and downs, well before this past year. It’s been documented that things were financially a struggle for him in his pre-BTS days. That job at the recording studio? It very well may not have paid much (nor anything for that matter) but he was allowed to use the equipment and thus, began to gain some production and engineering experience as a trade-off.

And he’s talked about being short on funds and having to decide, “bus fare or food?” When meeting even your basic needs are that much of a challenge, it’s pretty tough to have big, lofty dreams. You’re just trying to get by each day.

So Suga knows. He’s been there. And it wasn’t that long ago. Think about it- only ten years. One decade. Sure, it’s not super recent but we’re certain, those lean years are still fairly fresh in his mind. Which is why we believe he’s so accepting of others, kind and generous with all he’s earned.

And those days impact him still. This shoulder injury he’s dealing with? It goes back to a motorcycle accident early on in his BTS trainee days. He had a part time job as a delivery boy. He was hit while riding and didn’t want to tell anyone. For many reasons: he needed the money and the job, he didn’t want the injury to get him cut from Big Hit, and he didn’t tell his parents because he figured the medical expenses would be a burden. Again, let’s keep in mind this was roughly just 10 years ago. A lot for a young guy to be considering and worried about. Thank goodness that, now, he’s able to have that shoulder taken care of and he’ll be back with us, healthy and in good shape soon.

But there is always a flipside to every situation. Suga DOES have dreams. He has hopes and goals. And along with his bandmates? He’s making those come true! The phrase, “What Suga wants, Suga gets.” has become pretty popular lately. Over the last few years, he’s often asked in interviews what he’d like to see the group achieve moving forward. So far? Everything he’s mentioned, they’ve crushed it. Hmmm. What’s next? The GRAMMYs!

Seriously, the list of hopeful achievements he’s put out there is far too long for us to recap on our own- here’s a fun article from Koreaboo.com that provides a nice overview. Way to go Suga for speaking those big wishes into truth.
