Do You Know BTS? Let’s keep talking and learn some things about Suga!
Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993 in Buk District, Daegu in South Korea. Although he’s mentioned in the past that he was not a big fan of studying and school itself, he still followed the normal path, education-wise, and completed all his necessary coursework for graduation. It seems Yoongi came from rather humble means and has also mentioned in past interviews that his parents were fairly strict, particularly noting that his father wasn’t the affectionate type. Although, at times, Suga may come across as a bit more reserved and introverted than the other members, we’ve heard plenty of heart-warming stories about his kindness and loving ways. Perhaps this is in part to make sure he’s less like his own dad? He’s even spoken about wanting to be more involved and affectionate when he has kids of his own one day. He famously seems to get grumpy when the guys sweep him up into a big hug but the theory out there is that he really does love it! By the age of 13, Yoongi began writing lyrics and discovered rap. Next, he landed a part-time job, when he was 17, at a recording studio. It was through that experience that he was exposed to learning more about composing music as well as producing and arranging. He’s been quoted about his first foray into composing, “There was no special motivation for making music. I just had to do it.” He started to delve into the underground rap scene during those early years, using the moniker Gloss. He was also part of a hip-hop crew called D-town in 2010, just prior to joining Big Hit. And that Big Hit connection? It was a result of his taking second place in the “Hit It” rap audition held by the label that same year. As we mentioned in our previous post, Yoongi came on board with Big Hit as a producer but rather quickly shifted to rapper as the original BTS was supposed to be a hip-hop trio with he, RM and j-hope. The group eventually evolved to include the four additional vocalists (Jung Kook, Taehyung, Jimin and Jin) and changed their format to a more traditional K-pop/idol model. Yoongi’s stage name originates from his love of basketball; he played a lot in his younger years. Suga is derived from the first syllables of the term “shooting guard”, which was the position he played as a student. We use both names interchangeably throughout our OLB content. Suga’s role within the group is multi-dimensional. He’s a rapper, dancer and all-around captivating performer- we love watching him rap. He has a very powerful presence on stage. Plus, he’s definitely an ARMY favorite! Yet it is his writing and producing skills that have been in play with BTS from the start and are what seems to really spark his passion. He is responsible for not only writing/composing much of the group’s music but he’s also very involved in the arranging, mixing and mastering of many songs. We recall watching one of the last episodes of “BTS – In the Soop” when the guys were recording the theme song for the show. Suga was totally in charge of producing the tune and it was fun to watch him in action. He always seems to have his laptop (and whatever other equipment he needs) at the ready in case inspiration strikes. Even when they’re off on these zany adventures. We’ll definitely share more about his writing/producing expertise in upcoming posts. He’s also released successful solo projects (mixtapes) under another alias, Agust D and has worked with a variety of other artists as well. As we so often see with all the members of BTS, Suga is his own unique person with an totally engaging personality. He’s very funny with a more dry, witty sense of humor. It seems that whenever chaos is ensuing with the other six spinning out of control (like in some zany episode of RUN BTS!), Suga is often off to the side taking it all in as if to say, “nope…not me” and we giggle every time we see a photo of these situations. There is Suga, somewhere in the background, just scrolling on his phone. He freely admits that he loves to spend any spare time sleeping and when asked what he’d like to be in a next life, he said, “I’d like to reincarnate into a stone so I can lie still.” The other members have joked that he pretty much sticks to spending his time at home or in the recording studio (aside from promotional appearances as necessary). He’s known to “live’ in the studio night and day when he’s deeply working on a project. But yet, thanks to all the up-close and wonderful content BTS has shared with ARMY, we do see there’s much more to Suga! He’s a solid, fun and loving friend whether it’s fishing with Jin or taking Jung Kook out for his first “of age” beer. We’ve seen him paint some truly amazing art. He, like many of the others, is quite the gamer and loves his puppy, Holly. He knows how to snap the perfect selfie and is quite the skilled cook. We see him often in the kitchen, along with Jin, whipping up some pretty delicious looking meals. FYI—these two were roommates in the dorms and are the two oldest in the group. They seem to be fairly close. Suga’s humor may come across as a bit more dead pan but he will occasionally let loose. Especially if a particular episode of RUN BTS! has him on the verge of losing his mind or one of the younger members has completely sent him over the edge. And no one can rock a goofy punishment costume quite like Yoongi, complete with a straight and serious expression on his face. And especially worth noting? He’s particularly famous for his very sweet smile. Again, we’ve drafted another rather long post but there is just so much to appreciate about Suga! He’s definitely known for his big heart too. But we’ll save more about that for our next post. Now you know about Suga- stay tuned for even more! .
