This iconic quote from a very driven, passionate Jung Kook gives us a real perspective into his overall attitude and most-likely why he’s been so successful.
Sure, we’ve commented quite a bit already about his Golden Maknae status- how he’s just good at everything. Is there some innate predisposition to success? Quite possibly. But we think a lot of what JK has achieved, by only his early 20’s, can be credited to his powerful mindset. What he wants, he sets out to make it happen. And maybe that’s a lesson we can all learn from- no matter our age, where we’re at in our own lives, or what it is that we truly wish for.
Jung Kook has spoken rather openly before about always feeling like he can do better. How does he become a better dancer, singer and performer? He wants to live up to the expectations of his fellow members and do well for them. He’s accused himself of not having the best follow-thru (although we find that hard to believe) and maybe that’s likely due to the very high expectations he’s set for himself.
The other guys in BTS have regularly mentioned how focused JK can become about a music project or even a hobby. Recently when they took up the tennis for a couple of episodes of RUN BTS! the general consensus was, “Great. Now he’s going to be obsessed with tennis and practice 24/7.” [paraphrasing] We’ve seen that same dedication happen over the years when it comes to rehearsals and recordings. How many times has he sang a line over and over into a mic to ensure his phrasing is just right- even if it’s just a 3-second blurb? Or once everyone else has packed up after sound-check he’ll realize there are still 20 minutes of time with the stage free and want to, by himself, squeeze in just a bit more dance practice.
We can often just see his mind working—whether it’s putting clues together for, again, some RUN BTS mission, figuring out (and doing it perfectly on the first try) how to filet a fresh fish or step in to cover the rap portion of “Best of Me” for a recovering Suga on New Year’s Eve. He’s willing to figure stuff out and TRY anything. Isn’t that a pretty admirable personality trait?
Again, can’t we all learn from that too? If there’s an interest or shift you’re curious about, go for it! You’ll never know unless you TRY something. And then also be willing to put in the effort (practice) so you can feel assured you gave that something your all! Even if it doesn’t turn out as you hoped? You tried!
Granted we’re not with BTS all the time, but at least with what they’ve chosen to share with the public, we’ve NEVER seen Jung Kook give less than his all. Nor have we ever seen him not be willing to attempt something. There’s never been a, “Nope. That’s not my thing.” Never a, “Forget it…I give up!” Since that 13-year-old boy left home for Seoul, he’s been giving BTS and ARMY everything he has. And we love how he’s not afraid to give something totally new a whirl- did you know he even made an appearance on Korea’s version of “The Masked Singer” as Fencing Man? He didn’t get too far in the early rounds but he jumped right into the experience and admitted afterwards that it was different, but he had a lot of fun!
Much of what seems to drive him, too, is fear of regrets. He doesn’t want to look back on this prime era for BTS and feel like he missed out on anything. He’s willing to go above and beyond and do his best no matter what. No regrets!
For more interesting insight to JK’s outlook and his cool perspective on his efforts, we recommend reading Weverse’s Comeback Interview from November 2020. We’ve suggested these for other members and Jung Kook’s is excellent too. Great photos and a super interesting read! Let us know- what do YOU admire most about Jung Kook?
