Do you know BTS? | J-Hope

We want to talk (and share) some more about j-hope! This quote not only helps to understand the backstory about his name but it also sums HIM up perfectly. Hope seems to define his beginning, his now and his future. He IS hope for himself, BTS and ARMY. It’s not only about his own hope but the hope he puts out into the world. 💜

We’ve all heard him introduce himself so many times, “I’m your HOPE. You’re my Hope. I’m j-hope.” During the BTS documentary “Bring the Soul” he explains how the moniker came to be:

“Me, RM, and Bang Si Hyuk were there. When we were making names, I said I wanted ‘Ho’ in my name, so at first it was J-Ho. We kept thinking, ‘J-Ho’? J-Ho? J-Hope? That’s how we came up with my name. The meanings came after that. Pandora’s Box [a mystical ancient artifact tied to the character Pandora of Greek Mythology] was mentioned, and the last thing left in the box was hope. We were all like, ‘Hope’. Looking back, I think the name was the right choice. And I think the name made me who I am.”

Which came first? It’s maybe a chicken/egg kind of game. Was he always positive and the name suited him well or did he choose to rise up to this stage name, filled with and exuding hope? Maybe both?

This creates the perfect transition for us to talk more about Hobi’s kind, giving heart. He is passionate about children’s charities such as the Child Fund Korea (noted as a Green Noble Club member aka high-value donor), specifically dedicating his funds towards those attending his high school alma mater. He has also generously supported organizations that aid children with visual and hearing impairments as well as those recently affected by the economic difficulties due to COVID. He has requested the details remain private. j-hope has been a visible supporter of the Black Lives Matters (BLM) movement too (via Twitter).

He’s certainly experienced his own ups/downs in life, likely a factor in his having such a big, caring heart. Although he’s from a loving, comfortable family, when he left home and set off to make his dreams come true with BTS, there still were hard times and some heartache.

We touched on those pre-debut days when he left but RM convinced everyone involved that j-hope MUST be part of the group! Although not a lot has been confirmed, there are also stories Hobi almost left a second time. This time due to social media bullying and harassment. It was early days and several negative comments, hashtags, etc. were circulating, causing him to consider walking away again. Luckily this time though, things were dealt with, it ended and nothing seemed to come of it in the long run. Still? It must have been a very difficult time for him.

How strong and positive he is! He has chosen to have this grateful and generous mindset. He’s admitted laughter energizes him and he taps his sense of humor often. Plus, it is so special how he lets the love he has for his fellow members and ARMY be his top priority. He truly feels he is who he is thanks to his six hyungs. In the documentary, “Bring the Soul” he said, “Without them, I’m not J-Hope. I’m just Jung Hoseok.”

He’s happy and upbeat and always there for everyone. Jimin has been quoted as saying, “But the fact that he thinks a member having a hard time is more frustrating than his own is so sweet, kind and thoughtful. He’s such a thankful member that I think, ‘if he was not on our team, would this team have reached where we are now?’”

We’ve said it about ALL the members, each has their special place in the formula that makes BTS so amazing. So no, it’s likely they wouldn’t be where they are today without Hoseok. Thanks goodness he stayed the course; he’s truly been their beacon of pure hope. And ours too!
